Other Web Links

The Grenade web site

During the 2006 Regimental Celebrations another web site was set up solely for the purpose of promoting the celebration year. At the end of 2006 it was decided that this web site should continue for at least a further year, or perhaps longer, and I can recommend it to you all. There is some duplication between this site and the one which I look after but that is all to the good. I have been asked HQ to point out that you should have a look at it and in particular the entry concerning "The Colonel's Fund" which, as many of you will know, has been set up to help the serving men of the Regiment who have been wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan and will need ongoing help. Click on the side panel to take you to "THE GRENADE" web site.

The War Graves Commission.

Did you know that you can find the location of any grave or memorial from the War Graves Commission Web site. You do need to have available the persons Surname and Initials and if you know it, whether the person died in which of the wars or perhaps the year of death.

A search will take a few minutes but it is worth the wait.

The Grenadier Guards Roll of Honour  Here we have a new web site set up by Peter MacDonald whose father was in the 6th Battalion in Italy. I have looked at this site for myself and I find the facts and figures most interesting about the numbers of Grenadiers lost in WW I and WW II as well as since then. He tells me the site is still developing and the end product will be to give details, as far as possible, of each man who gave the untimate sacrifice. The site is well worth a look and any comments should be sent direct to Peter MacDonald at info@thegrenadierguards.co.uk   In the meantime have a look at the site by clicking on the side panal address.
The Friends of War Memorials  There are around 60,000 memorials in Britain and they include elaborate statues, gateways, arches, clock towers, memorial halls as well as village and town crosses. Sadly they are often violated as lavatories, carvings, graffiti dustbins and theft and damage. Redevelopment of sites of memorial halls and clock towers etc mean that many memorials are lost for ever. Membership of The Friends of War Memorials allows people to do something to stop this More detail and how to join the Friends is available on their web site.

The Army Benevolent Fund Many of you will know of the Army Benevolent Fund and all that it does for the welfare of former members of the Army. The Memorial Garden at Palace Barracks, Holywood, Northern Ireland.

I have recently had an email from Mr Albert Owens in Northern Ireland who has asked if I will put a web site link in the Association web site. This concerns the Memorial Garden which is situated at Palace Barracks, in Holywood, Northern Ireland. He says :-

As well as running the garden we also cater for the families of those members of the Armed forces who lost their lives in conflicts world wide.At this moment in time I have 138 families on my books, they receive regular newsletters and if they wish we will arrange for them to visit the garden. All food, accommodation and transport is free and in extreme cases of hardship we will pay their fares,.

The Oldoppos web site Oldoppos.co.uk started as a small project as Mark Plater says he was only looking for old mates of his and then he had the idea of making a web site for all ex service men and women. The site holds details of Navy, Army and RAF units since World War Two. If a unit no longer exists or is not included in the site then by sending an email to Mark Plater it will be added within a few days. The largest audience for the web site is in the UK but there have been significant numbers browsing regularly from Australia, New Zealand, Asia, Africa, Europe and of course North America. Oldoppos encourages picture submissions, ancedotes and other material. You can join up and chat to like minded people. The Family Help section offers information to assist with research into the service careeer of a friend or relative. Give it ago and I (the Web Master-Derek Money) will be interested in whether you think this is a good site.
